Media Center Policies
The mission of Mimosa Elementary's Media Center is to promote a love of reading, to encourage lifelong learning, and to ensure that all students, teachers, and staff are effective users of ideas and information.
Student Check-Out:
- Students in Kindergarten and grade 1 may check out 1 book at a time to keep in their classroom.
- Students in grades 2-5 may check out 2 books at a time and may take them home. It is up to the homeroom teacher whether library books stay in the classroom or go home with the student. Parents may also choose whether or not students bring books home.
- 1st grade students may not take books home until after Curriculum Night, where they will receive information from their homeroom teachers about check out procedures and book care.
- If a student is working on a project or presentation, they may check out an additional book that pertains to the research topic.
Overdue Items:
- All materials may be checked out for two weeks. Most items may be renewed for another 2 weeks, if another student is not waiting for that item.
- We do not charge fines for overdue or late books.
- However, if an item is not returned by its due date, no new books may be checked out until it is returned,
- Overdue notices are provided to the classroom teacher at the end of each month.
Lost/Damaged Items:
Students who lose or damage a book will be expected to pay a non-refundable $5 fine.
Damage includes (but is not limited to):
- Coloring or writing on any pages
- Water or other liquid damage anywhere on the book (be careful of water bottles in backpacks!)
- Ripped/torn/missing/chewed cover or pages
- Food/stains
Refunds
Students who have paid the full amount for a lost book will receive a refund if the book is found and returned to the media center within the same week it was lost, and in good condition. A letter will be sent to the student's class, and the cash amount can be picked up in the media center.
Fines cannot be refunded.
